Draft Te Reo Matatini me Pāngarau (Literacy and Numeracy) standards were released today for public feedback.

The standards are intended to credential foundational te reo matatini me pāngarau and, when finalised, can be used to meet the new NCEA literacy and numeracy co-requisite.
The draft standards and associated materials will be refined following public feedback to ensure they will be fit for purpose. They will then be piloted in Terms 3 and 4 of the 2021 school year.
The Reo Matatini me Pāngarau | Literacy and Numeracy standards are being introduced from 2023 to help ensure that everyone who has an NCEA qualification is equipped with the foundational literacy and numeracy skills they need to successfully navigate an information-rich world. The standards will be externally assessed and students will need to achieve them in order to be awarded any level of NCEA qualification.
The Ministry of Education will be working with NZQA to phase in the requirements so that schools, wharekura and tertiary providers have adequate time to prepare students. This will include an opportunity to access the standards in 2022 before they become mandatory in 2023. More details on this will be released later this year.
